The historic kingdom of Annam is now part of what Asian country?
About 2200 years ago (C. 200 BCE), the Chinese conquered an area that is now part of Vietnam and named it 'Annam' (meaning "Pacified South") When Vietnam was united in 1802, the city of Hue became its capital. The Nguyễn Dynasty nominally ruled Annam, with a puppet emperor residing in Huế. In 1948, the protectorate was merged in the Provisional Central Government of Vietnam, which was replaced the next year by the newly established State of Vietnam. The name Annam was used in the West to refer to Vietnam as a whole. Vietnamese were referred to as "Annamites."
